The Lake City Historical Society has assembled a free historical display of artifacts, pictures and an educational video related to the bygone Pearl Button making industry.
The building was one of many button cutting and polishing factories located on the shores of the Mississippi River between St. Paul, MN. and Muscatine IA. Special hooks were dragged on the bottom of the river to capture the clams. Button blanks were cut from the clamshells. The hooks, tools, clamshells, and finished buttons are available for viewing.
